TOS Weekly - Will Artemis Succeed Where Apollo Failed?

Welcome to TOS Weekly!

Human civilization is capable of reaching far greater heights than anything seen until now, and this week’s Artemis II flight around the Moon is a tantalizing glimpse of the future we could have. But the fact that it has taken fifty-four years for humans to return to the Moon is a stark reminder that we could have been much closer to that future by now.

In my new article on the flight of Artemis II, I explore the story of America’s space program from the Apollo to the present day, identifying why it’s failed to achieve its long-held goals of a permanent human presence on the Moon and the manned exploration of Mars and beyond. In answering that question, it becomes clear that the Artemis Program shares many of the same flaws that undermine its predecessors, and that if we want to see a spacefaring future for humankind, a different approach is needed.

In the philosophically muddled political culture we live in today, the prominent opposition to Marxism-inspired efforts to malign and undo the achievements of Western culture comes in the form of conservatism. In that context, it is increasingly common for conservatives to claim that Christianity was a key part of why the West became enlightened and industrialized, unlike other parts of the world. But is there truth to this claim? In his rigorous article, Frederick Seiler explores the role of religion in the scientific revolution to see how it may have helped or hindered the West’s embrace of science and reason.

TOS Weekly - The Values of Love and Friendship

Welcome to this week’s TOS Weekly!

Modern cinema is replete with movies that claim to be love stories, but what many of them depict as “love” is really infatuation rather than the esteeming of another person’s values and character. In his new review essay, Tim White highlights a recent example of this tendency, Luc Besson’s new adaptation of Dracula, noting the film’s merits compared to many modern movies while examining the errors it makes in depicting the nature of love.

True love can of course exist in the form of close friendships as well as romantic relationships. This week, I have decided to highlight a classicTV series—1971’s The Persuaders!—that depicts loving friendship exceptionally well, and that depicts the fact that a life of wealth and pleasure won’t be satisfying without a meaningful purpose.

True friendship—a trade of spiritual values between two people who admire each other’s characters—is one of the most enriching aspects of a full life. A heartwarming example of this is the short-lived but value-packed friendship between James Dean and Eartha Kitt. In her first TOS article, musician Rebecca Day explores this life-affirming relationship and what it demonstrates about the deep love true friends can share.

Another key aspect of a full life is the ability to think clearly. Language is our tool of comprehension, yet more and more people in the West today leave school with little understanding of how to use it properly, stymying their ability to think and communicate. Michael Rose’s new book The Subversive Art of a Classical Education is a line in the sand against this trend, as Tim White expounds in his new review.

TOS Weekly - How to Stop Trump’s Tyranny

In recent weeks, Donald Trump’s lack of principle has been on display perhaps more than ever. After failing to fulfill his promise to defend the Iranian protesters, he sidestepped that crucially important issue to focus on his obsession with conquering Greenland, needlessly threatening more destructive tariffs and penning an embarrassing letter to the prime minister of Norway blaming that country for not awarding him a Nobel Peace Prize. This kind of behavior is expected from Trump at this stage, but it points to the president’s dangerous fixation on his own image at the expense of due process and individual rights. Nicholas Provenzo’s double review of two new books about dealing with dictators shines a light on the cultural trends that have given rise to two Trump presidencies and the steps Americans must take in order to protect what remains of the freest nation on Earth.

The cultural trends that have made our current situation possible go back centuries and ultimately stem from a widespread abandonment of the principles of the Enlightenment—the ideas that reason is man’s means of knowledge and that all people should be free to use their reason to identify and pursue their values. Good books on the Enlightenment—especially accessible, clearly written ones—are a rarity in today’s academia. This week, Margherita Bovo reviews one of those rare diamonds in the rough, Ritchie Robertson’s The Enlightenment: The Pursuit of Happiness, drawing out the core Enlightenment values that so many other writers seem to misunderstand or overlook altogether but which are crucial to achieving happiness and building a better society.

All of us who have had our lives transformed by Ayn Rand’s ideas have an “origin story” for how we discovered them. For many, that includes a “gateway drug”—something adjacent to or influenced by Objectivism that introduced us to rational philosophy. One of the most common of these is the progressive rock band Rush. Their intricate, philosophically rich, and emotionally resonant music attracts and fuels active minds—especially their epic storytelling masterpiece “2112,” influenced by Ayn Rand’s Anthem. That song, and the album of the same name, turn 50 this year, which is the perfect time to celebrate it and Rush’s firm refusal to compromise on their musical values.

If compromise is rife in music, it’s even more ubiquitous in politics. In recent days, we’ve heard President Trump say that the United States will come to the aid of the Iranian protestors if the regime there starts killing them. It has—and yet Trump is backpedaling, willing to accept the regime’s denial of its vicious rights violations. A principled president would stand firm in his support—verbal or military—for those seeking to overthrow Khamenei’s dictatorship. Craig Biddle’s article on why free countries should support these protestors—written during one of the previous uprisings in 2018—is even more vital today, when freedom-loving Iranians are facing brutal suppression at the hands of the barbarian theocracy under which they struggle to live. Let’s hope they succeed in overthrowing it this time.

In the forty-five years since Carolyn Merchant released The Death of Nature, academics have widely accepted her package-dealing of feminism and environmentalism into the gestalt concept of “ecofeminism.” As Margherita Bovo’s new review describes, this anti-concept is built on Merchant’s fundamental rejection of the idea that humans are rational beings and her unfounded assumption that science is inherently misogynist—an assumption that has sadly colored academia ever since.

As dire as so many things seem in today’s world, there are also many causes for hope, and high among them is the resurgence once again of protests in Iran. Now is a good time to remind ourselves of how free countries should respond to regimes like the one that Iranian people have been struggling to throw off for decades.

TOS Weekly - Jihad, Appeasement, and Evil

Welcome to this week’s TOS Weekly!

In the wake of last week’s horrific events in Sydney, it’s vital that we identify and oppose the ideology that motivated that atrocity and so many others like it. Craig Biddle does just that in his article “Ten Steps to End the Jihad Against the West.” That vicious crusade will end only when Western politicians and intellectuals stand up for the values that Americans, Australians, and all those lucky enough to grow up in the civilized world owe their freedom to: reason and rights.

Appeasing vicious, anti-life ideologies only enables them in the long run, a lesson the West should have learned in the 1940s. Adolf Hitler appointed himself leader of the German army eighty-four years ago today, one of his many tyrannical actions ultimately enabled by Britain and other countries’ appeasement of the Nazis in the 1930s. John David Lewis’s deep dive into that story of appeasement and compromise clarifies how important it is that we stand firmly by the principles on which freedom depends when dealing with those who would deprive us of our lives and liberty.

TOS Weekly - Celebrate Producers this Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at The Objective Standard! This holiday is a unique celebration of the virtue that made America great and that makes human life possible: productiveness, a virtue Craig Biddle celebrates in his Thanksgiving tribute to producers and value-creators of all kinds and his article on why we should say justice rather than grace.

In that spirit, one of the values I’ve produced this week is a short retrospective article on one of my all-time favorite movies, GoldenEye, which turns 30 this year. At a time when many thought that James Bond movies were an outdated relic of the Cold War, GoldenEye modernized and matured the series for the new context of the 1990s while keeping its fundamental elements intact—a clear statement that Bond’s values of heroism, patriotism, and the defense of Western freedom are timeless.

TOS Weekly - William F. Buckley's True Nature

On Monday, conservatives across the U.S. and beyond will celebrate what would have been William F. Buckley’s 100th birthday. Many will agree with the Heritage Foundation’s appraisal that the National Review founder and provocative TV debater was a man of “clarity, sobriety, and intellectual honesty.” But Craig Biddle profoundly disagrees with this assessment, highlighting Buckley’s deeply dishonest treatment of Ayn Rand.

Newly released this week is first-time TOS writer John Devlin’s deep dive into the moral message of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It has become accepted wisdom to claim that the creator, not the creature, is the “real monster,” but that popular bromide, Devlin argues, amounts to sanctioning the creature’s rampages in a way that would be deeply unjust in real life.

TOS Weekly - Frankenstein's Redemption

Movie adaptations of great novels are almost always inferior to the original work. But that may not be the case for Guillermo del Toro’s new version of Frankstein, which hits cinemas and Netflix tomorrow. In his new review of the movie, Tim White argues that del Toro’s adaptation is both faithful and creative in how it adapts this philosophically rich story. After reading Tim’s review, I can’t wait to see what the creator of such cinematic art as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water has done with Mary Shelley’s classic tale.

Also new this week, Craig Biddle has dived deep into the weeds of metaethics on his Substack, Thinking in Principles. Although the article is a little on the technical side for TOS, those of you who delight in the philosophic nitty-gritty are sure to enjoy it. Meanwhile, from the archive, I explain why I think my fellow Brits s hould reject monarchy and embrace rights, and Alexander V. Marriott sets the record straight on Abraham Lincoln’s legacy. Lastly, we look back on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and acknowledge the service of those who risk everything in the defense of freedom as we approach Veterans’ Day.

TOS Weekly - Two Unsung Heroes of Science

Isaac Newton once famously wrote, “if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” This week, I shine a light on two of those giants: Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler. Through dogged determination and relentless attention to detail, they discovered the true structure of the Solar System, paving the way for Newton’s discovery of the laws of motion.

Also new this week, Timothy Sandefur reviews The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding by Joseph Ellis, a disappointingly unprincipled reaction to the slew of anti-American revisionism dominating the history profession today.
